Who are we?
The Creative Education
Academy is an elementary school (half-day and full-day
Kindergarten through 6th grade), founded and operated by parents,
based on the Cre-Act
Way.
What is the Cre-Act
Way?
The Cre-Act Way was developed by
Sister Dorothy Prokes, founder of the former Franciscan Cre-Act School in Pocatello,
Idaho. The Cre-Act Way is briefly defined in Prokes' book
as a "form of instruction which involves the total person
-- physical body, mind, senses, imagination, emotions,
power of speech, and concentration in the learning
process." The purpose of this highly successful program
"is to provide the situations which will enable the
student to experience life as it evolves in the real world
in ways commensurate to that student's ability to
comprehend." (Prokes, 2009, p.
12-13).
More information about the Cre-Act
Way can be found in Sister Dorothy Prokes' book and
instructor's manual, A Road Map to Education, The
Cre-Act Way, published by University Press of
America.
Why Use the
Cre-Act Way?
Traditionally, the goals of education
were to master the accumulated wisdom and ideas of the
past. We must prepare our children beyond these goals if
they are to thrive in today’s world. Society requires us
to be adaptable, to be capable of managing and developing
solutions for complex situations, and to resolving
conflict peacefully. To meet these demands, we must
nurture children’s imagination, creativity and
inventiveness. We must teach our children to explore the
known, as well as the
unknown.
The Cre-Act Way was developed with
consideration for our past heritage, our current
challenges, and our future possibilities. It is an
approach to helping our children build a life which is
not alien and confusing, but one in which a child touches
and in turn is touched by truth, beauty, justice and
love.
Quality education requires a more
creative environment, better curriculum design, and time to
develop resources, ideas and means of experimentation. Recent
research indicates that not all students learn the same way,
and that for some, the right side of the brain with its
aesthetic and creative powers plays a dominant role in the
learning process.
